Do UK customs search external hard drive?

I will be leaving in October from the US for a one year Master's degree program in the UK (flying into Leeds/Bradford). I will be bringing my macbook and an external hard drive with me carry on. I have been reading that some people get their laptops and external hard drives searched by UK customs. Is that true?
