Over the weekend we heard on the news that worshipped animals were causing havoc in India. 1st commandment?

Exodus 20:1-5 God spake saying: "You shall have no other gods before Me." That seems fairly straightforward, how can anyone misunderstand that? But as a consequence people suffer a near plague. If anyone deserts the one true God they are bound to find they create big problems for themselves.
