Why do Christians seem to have the most backward understanding of Christ?

Ghandi once said, "I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ" This is profound because it seems Christians have very little real understanding of the messages attributed to Christ. I.E. many Christians support war, the death penalty, revenge and many other actions and emotions contrary to the teachings of Christ. Thoughts?
