What was the population of Rome during the age of Julius caesar? and how much did it's urban area extend?

I once read that by the 1st century AD the population was only about 500 thousand, and it was the largest known city by then! I think the city where I am now (Tripoli, Lebanon) is small, but it's population in appx. 500 thousands!
